Warning: Free VPN App Drains Bank Accounts by Spying on Users – UKNIP

A free VPN app is secretly spying on users’ screens and then wiping out their bank accounts. Modpro IP TV + VPN, downloaded by at least 3,000 people, harbours a dangerous malware called Klopatra, cybersecurity firm Cleafy has revealed.

Malware Takes Remote Control to Steal Your Data

Cleafy uncovered that Klopatra has evolved significantly. It can now remotely control infected devices and swipe sensitive banking details. Once activated, the malware requests extensive permissions, with a critical one being the Android Accessibility Services permission.

Cleafy warns:

“Accessibility Services are designed to help users with disabilities by allowing apps to read screen content and perform actions for the user. In the hands of malware, this becomes a weapon.”

How the Malware Spreads

First spotted in March, Klopatra has been altered over 40 times to dodge security measures. It originated in Turkey and unlike many cyberthreats, spreads through malicious websites rather than apps.

Spot the Signs Your Phone Might Be Hacked

If you’re worried your phone might be infected, watch for these red flags:

  1. Battery problems: Unexpected drain could mean malware running in the background.
  2. Surge in data usage: Hackers could be stealing data without your knowledge.
  3. Sluggish performance: Malware strains your device’s resources, slowing it down.
  4. Unknown apps: Spotting apps you don’t remember installing is a huge warning sign.
