M11 Chaos After Lorry Crashes Through Barrier Near Stansted Airport

Part of the M11 has been closed for several hours after a lorry crashed through the barrier in Essex this morning (March 31), causing long traffic delays.

The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway between junction J8 (Stansted Airport) and J10 (Duxford). Footage from the scene shows the lorry leaning on its left side, almost tipped over into a ditch.

Traffic Disruption and Diversions

All lanes on the northbound side have been closed as recovery crews work to remove the vehicle and repair the barrier. National Highways has described the recovery and barrier repair as “complicated” and has not yet provided an estimated time for reopening.

Drivers are experiencing significant delays, with congestion stretching back three miles. Motorists approaching J8 are advised to expect around 20-minute delays and plan extra time for their journeys.

Passengers heading to Stansted Airport can still reach the terminal from J8, but traffic is building on the approach. Diversions are in place via the A120, and drivers are advised to follow the route marked with the solid circle symbol on local road signs.

Police and Recovery Efforts

The crash occurred shortly before 6 am, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Essex Police are managing the scene, while recovery teams work to stabilize the lorry and repair the damaged barrier.

There are no reports of injuries at this time, but the incident has caused considerable disruption to morning commuters and those traveling to Stansted Airport.

Advice for Motorists

Authorities urge motorists to avoid the area if possible and follow the recommended diversion routes to minimize delays. Updates will be provided as the situation develops and once the road is cleared.

For real-time traffic updates, drivers can visit the National Highways website or follow local traffic alerts.
