Two Indian students have died and five others were injured after a two-vehicle crash at the Rayleigh Spur roundabout on the A130 near Wickford in the early hours of Monday morning.
The victims were named as Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu, both in their 20s.
Emergency services were called shortly after 4.15am on 1 September. Police confirmed that two men from Barking, east London, aged 23 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. They have since been released on bail until 20 November.
Five others in hospital
In total, nine students — all believed to be from the Telugu community — were travelling together. Five remain in hospital receiving urgent medical care.
Community reaction
The National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK (NISAU) issued a statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Essex involving nine students from the Telugu community. The accident has claimed the precious lives of two young students, Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Several other students remain in hospital and under urgent medical care. We are keeping them and their families in our thoughts and prayers, and we hope for their swift and full recovery.
NISAU stands in solidarity with all the students and families affected by this tragedy. We are working closely with community members and relevant authorities to ensure the wellbeing of the students and to provide support wherever needed.”
Police appeal
Essex Police confirmed that the serious collision investigation unit is continuing enquiries and appealed for dashcam, CCTV, or witness evidence.
A spokesperson said:
