London Travel Chaos: Rotherhithe and Limehouse Link Tunnels Closed

London commuters are facing severe disruption this morning following the closure of both the Limehouse Link and Rotherhithe tunnels amid separate incidents, triggering serious congestion across East London and public transport delays across multiple lines.

Police Incident: Woman Threatening to Jump from Bridge Over Limehouse Link

A female individual is threatening to jump from a bridge over the Limehouse Link tunnel, prompting a large-scale police operation in the area.

Emergency services remain at the scene, where the Limehouse Link tunnel (A1203) remains closed. Long tailbacks have developed on the A13 eastbound, reaching back to Prince Regent Lane.

Rotherhithe Tunnel Closure Due to Technical Fault

Elsewhere, the Rotherhithe Tunnel (A101) is closed in both directions due to an “asset fault,” causing further travel disruption across Bermondsey, Wapping, and adjacent routes. Drivers are advised to avoid river crossings in this area and consider alternative routes.

Rail and Tube Network Affected

London’s transport disruption extends beyond the roads:

  • Southeastern Rail is operating under a speed restriction due to defective track, with services to/from Charing Cross delayed or cancelled.

  • Bakerloo Line has severe delays between Queen’s Park and Elephant & Castle.

  • District Line is severely disrupted between Earl’s Court and Ealing Broadway/Richmond.

What Should Commuters Do?

  • Avoid the A1203, A13, and A101 corridors where possible

  • Use real-time updates via TfL and National Rail apps

  • Consider walking or cycling if journey distance allows

  • Allow extra time for all travel through East and Central London
