Volodymyr Zelenskyy Rejects French President’s Call for Truce During Paris Olympics

In a bold move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly declined French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine during the upcoming Paris Olympics. Zelenskyy expressed concerns that such a truce could inadvertently favour Russia and jeopardise Ukraine’s security.

The concept of a truce during the Games harks back to ancient Greece, where warring city-states would lay down their arms for the duration of the athletic competitions. However, Zelenskyy remains skeptical. “Let’s be honest, Emmanuel,” “Who can guarantee that Russia won’t exploit this opportunity to shift its forces onto our territory?”

Zelenskyy’s stance is clear: any truce that benefits the adversary is unacceptable. He emphasises that Ukraine stands resolute against measures that could play into Russia’s hands.

Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed this sentiment during his visit to China. He dismissed the idea, asserting that the Olympics themselves violated the Games’ principles by requiring Russian athletes to compete as neutrals. Putin emphasised reciprocity: “If you demand something from someone, you must adhere to the rules yourself.”
