Chelmsford: Judge Praises Officers’ ‘Skill and Commitment’ as Drug Dealers are Sentenced

In a significant victory against drug-related crime in Chelmsford, members of an organised crime group (OCG) have been handed sentences following a meticulous investigation by law enforcement authorities. Jordan Sweeney, identified as a key figure directing the supply of illicit drugs, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of being concerned in the supply of Class A and Class B drugs.

Sweeney’s co-defendant, Reece Turner, who was directed by Sweeney to distribute the drugs, received a suspended sentence of 24 months, accompanied by stringent conditions imposed by the judge. This outcome, achieved through the collective efforts of dedicated officers, underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related offences in the area.

The investigation, spearheaded by officers from the Op Orochi team, targeted the supply of illicit drugs in Essex, particularly through County Lines gangs or OCGs. Through meticulous intelligence work, Sweeney was identified as a person of interest, leading to the subsequent identification and arrest of Turner as the individual tasked with distributing the drugs.

During planned warrants executed in December, both Sweeney and Turner were apprehended. A search of Sweeney’s residence yielded crucial evidence, including mobile phones relevant to the investigation and over £2,000 in cash. Charged with various drug-related offences, the pair faced prosecution, culminating in their recent sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court.

In delivering the sentences, Recorder Hallam KC commended the investigating officers for their “skill and enterprise” in bringing the illicit enterprise to a halt. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by law enforcement in dismantling criminal operations that threaten community safety.

However, the work does not conclude with sentencing. Authorities are actively pursuing Sweeney through the Proceeds of crime act, with further measures, including a Serious Crime Prevention Order, being sought to prevent future criminal activity upon his release from prison.

Detective Superintendent Gary Biddle, head of the serious violence unit, emphasized the dedication of the officers involved in the investigation, highlighting their efforts to provide overwhelming evidence of Sweeney and Turner’s involvement in the illicit drug trade.

Chief Inspector Paul Ballard, Chelmsford district commander, reiterated the collaborative effort of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding communities against the harmful impact of drug-related crime. He expressed confidence that the successful outcome of the investigation contributes to enhancing the safety and well-being of the city’s residents.

The sentencing of Sweeney and Turner marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in Chelmsford, reaffirming the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law and protect communities from the scourge of illicit drugs.
