West London Drivers Warned Over ‘Clip for Cash’ Scam Surge in Uxbridge Area

Motorists across Uxbridge, Greenford, Hayes, Pinner, and Southall are being urged to stay vigilant as a rising number of “Clip for Cash” scams are targeting drivers in West London.

The scam involves fraudsters waiting in parked cars on residential roads and throwing objects—such as rocks—at passing vehicles to create a loud impact sound. The victims are then accused of clipping the fraudster’s wing mirror and pressured into handing over hundreds of pounds in cash on the spot.

According to reports from the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), at least a dozen cases have been reported in the UB postcode area in recent months, and the scam has also been seen across other parts of London, the South West, and Wales.

How the Scam Works

  • The fraudster parks on the left-hand side of a quiet residential road.
  • As an unsuspecting driver passes slowly, they throw an object to simulate a collision.
  • They then flash their lights or follow the vehicle, urging the driver to stop.
  • Once stopped, they accuse the driver of damaging their mirror and demand immediate cash, often up to £500.
  • If refused, threats or intimidation may follow.

Nicola Smith, Intelligence and Investigations Manager at the IFB, warned:

“These fraudsters trick innocent motorists into thinking they’ve caused genuine damage. It’s an increasing threat, especially as offenders are turning to threatening behaviour. We’re urging everyone to be alert to the warning signs and avoid handing over cash.”

What to Do If You’re Targeted

Authorities are investigating the recent spike in reports and urging residents to spread awareness of the scam among friends, family, and local community groups.
