Coronation Street fans will be delighted to hear that George Banks is set to make a comeback to the long-running ITV soap opera after a five-year absence from our screens. Banks will reprise his role as Henry Newton, the ex-boyfriend of Gemma Winter-Brown, for a brief stint on the show.
Having made his debut on Corrie in 2017, Banks quickly became a fan favourite before bidding farewell to the cobbles in 2018. He will soon return to the soap, with revelations that might not sit well with Gemma and her husband Chesney.
Joining Banks in the list of returning Corrie stars is Dame Maureen Lipman, who is set to reprise her role as Evelyn Plummer. Lipman had initially left the show due to feeling “worn out” by her character’s storyline. However, recent sightings of her with fellow soap actors, including new addition Claire Sweeney, suggest that Lipman will be making a comeback to Coronation Street.
Speaking about her return, Sweeney expressed her excitement at joining the popular ITV soap opera. She reflected on her previous experiences in the entertainment industry, mentioning her time on Brookside and Celebrity Big Brother, which helped her gain recognition as Claire rather than her Brookside character, Lindsey Corkhill.
In a recent appearance on Good Morning Britain, Sweeney shared her enthusiasm for her new role, stating, “After I left Brookside and did Celebrity Big Brother, more people knew me as Claire and not Lindsey Corkhill. That was a great time, and it’s the first reality TV show of its kind, so it was such a big deal.
Regarding her character in Corrie, Sweeney revealed, “Tyrone was always led to believe Jackie was his mum and she wasn’t. He was then told his mum was dead. That’s the twist; I turn up to the cobbles with a few problems, a few major problems, and I’ll leave it there!”
The return of George Banks and Dame Maureen Lipman is sure to inject excitement into Coronation Street storylines, leaving fans eager to see how their characters will shake up the lives of their counterparts on the cobbles once again.
