Flood Alert Issued for Dartford: Pedestrians and Cyclists Urged to Exercise Caution

Pedestrians and cyclists in Dartford are being warned to remain vigilant after a flood alert was issued this morning (February 24) due to rising water levels along the River Darent.

The Environment Agency has raised concerns about potential flooding along the river, spanning from Westerham to Dartford, with particular emphasis on low-lying land and roads situated near the riverbanks. While no property flooding is expected, the agency has advised caution for anyone traveling in the area.

Flood Risk and Safety Warnings

The river levels were forecast to peak around midday, with conditions expected to gradually improve throughout the afternoon as water levels recede. However, the Environment Agency continues to advise the public to avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters, which can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.

A spokesperson for the agency stated:

“While we do not expect property flooding, the risk to roads, footpaths, and bridges near the River Darent remains significant. We strongly advise the public to avoid low-lying areas and to exercise caution when near watercourses.”

The warning applies especially to footpaths and bridges close to the river, which may be partially submerged or slippery due to the flooding.

Community Impact

Local residents have reported minor disruptions, with some low-lying roads experiencing surface water. Dartford Borough Council has confirmed that it is monitoring the situation and coordinating with emergency services to ensure public safety.

Tom Reed, a Dartford resident who commutes along the river’s cycle path, shared his concerns:

“I cycle this route daily, and this morning parts of the path were almost completely underwater. It’s a reminder of how quickly conditions can change.”

Weather Outlook

The Met Office has forecast improving weather conditions later this afternoon, with drier skies expected to help water levels subside naturally. No further significant rainfall is predicted in the immediate term, reducing the likelihood of additional flooding.

Key Safety Advice

The Environment Agency has issued the following safety guidelines:

  • Avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwater.
  • Stay away from low-lying footpaths and bridges near the River Darent.
  • Monitor local weather updates and flood warnings.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or significant flooding to local authorities.
