Man Dies After Police Shootout in Cumbria Home
A 40-year-old man was shot dead by police in a dramatic stand-off at a domestic property on Borland Avenue, Botcherby, on Monday afternoon.
Armed Officers Respond to Threats at Family Home
Just after 3.30pm, officers rushed to a house where a man had reportedly made threats to kill while young children were inside. Armed and unarmed cops entered the property, fearing imminent danger to a child.
According to initial reports, two armed officers fired their guns after identifying a serious threat. The man suffered head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene around 4.15pm.
Knife Found at Scene as Investigation Gets Underway
A knife was recovered from the property. Police have since taken statements from 11 officers and are reviewing body-worn camera footage to piece together what happened inside during the tense moments.
A post-mortem was carried out on Tuesday to help determine the exact cause of death.

“This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with all those affected. While police shootings are, thankfully, rare it is understandable that people will be concerned by recent events,” said IOPC Regional Director Catherine Bates.
“This was an isolated incident and our independent investigation will be thorough to ensure we understand the circumstances that have led to a man losing his life. We have met with the man’s family to explain our role and will be updating them as the investigation progresses.”
