Gareth Bale, the Welsh football legend, recently shared new insights into his career and life after football during an appearance on the Stick to Football podcast in March 2026. His revelations have captured widespread attention, shedding light on a secret injury, his transfer choices, and personal challenges that influenced his retirement.

Bale disclosed that he suffered a torn disc in his back at the age of 18 while playing for Tottenham Hotspur. Remarkably, he played his entire professional career managing this injury without public knowledge. The calf problems he faced at Real Madrid were not due to typical soft tissue issues but were linked to this longstanding back injury. Despite the physical toll, Bale adapted and succeeded, winning five Champions League titles before the injury ultimately forced him to retire.

Addressing the long-standing question about his transfer, Bale revealed that Manchester United, under David Moyes, offered him a higher salary than Real Madrid in 2013. However, Bale chose Real Madrid because he wanted to play for the biggest club in the world, and at that time, he believed that was Real Madrid. The world-record £85 million transfer fee was only part of the equation; his ambition and the lifestyle in Madrid were decisive factors.

In a candid interview with GQ magazine, Bale also shared the emotional reason behind his early retirement at 33. His father’s serious illness profoundly affected him, providing new perspective and making football something he could walk away from. This personal challenge, combined with his back injury, explains why he retired while many players are still active.

Born in Cardiff on 16 July 1989, Bale began his professional career at Southampton in 2006 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2007, where he evolved into one of the Premier League’s most feared attackers. His standout performance against Inter Milan in the 2010 Champions League group stage brought him international fame. Bale’s move to Real Madrid in 2013 marked the peak of his career, where he won five Champions League titles and scored memorable goals, including a spectacular overhead kick in the 2018 final against Liverpool.

Internationally, Bale earned 111 caps and scored 40 goals for Wales, playing a key role in their qualification for Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, Wales’ first major tournaments in decades. He retired from international football after the 2022 World Cup and from club football in January 2023.

Since retiring, Bale has focused on golf, investing in the TGL golf league co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Despite his substantial earnings during his career, Bale has expressed concerns about financial security, leading to cautious business ventures beyond golf.

Currently, Bale is involved in a bid to purchase Cardiff City, his hometown club. He is part of an investor group that has submitted a letter of intent to buy the team, describing the opportunity as a dream come true. This move reflects his serious interest in football ownership, following previous links to a US private equity bid for Plymouth Argyle.

Additionally, Bale recently commented on the possibility of Carlo Ancelotti managing Manchester United, making a lighthearted remark about Zinedine Zidane’s tactical role at Real Madrid while praising his man management skills.
