Darren Dovey is stepping down as Chief Fire Officer of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service this October, concluding a remarkable tenure that began in April 2016. Having twice delayed his retirement, he remained in post to oversee the transfer of fire service governance to Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Stephen Mold and to guide the service through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born in London but a Northampton local since the age of seven, Darren has dedicated decades to frontline fire service. His career started with Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue in 1987, followed by a move to London’s Fire Brigade in 1999. In 2008, he joined Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue as area manager before being appointed Chief Fire Officer.

Throughout his career, Darren has been involved in significant incidents including tackling the Windsor Castle fire, responding to the 7/7 bombings at Russell Square, and attending the Buncefield Oil Depot blaze. He also acted as press liaison during a tragic house fire in Stoke Newington where three children lost their lives.

Reflecting on his time in service, Darren said, “It has been an absolute privilege to lead Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue through very tough times. I’m proud to leave the service stable and ready to face future challenges. Keeping people safe is more than a job—it’s a vocation.”

He added, “I’m grateful to have worked with passionate colleagues who share the goal of serving our community. Over the coming months, I’ll focus on embedding recent improvements to make the service even stronger for the future.”

Stephen Mold, Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, paid tribute to Darren’s leadership, stating, “He tackled financial and organisational challenges head-on and made the service truly community-focused. During the pandemic, Darren ensured the fire service supported other agencies while keeping their core duties front and centre.”

Commissioner Mold concluded, “Darren’s shoes will be big ones to fill, but he leaves the service in a far stronger position than when he started.”
