Teen Fires ‘Gun’ at Cop Before Punching Her in Newport
A 16-year-old girl sparked shock in Newport after pulling a BB gun on a police officer and firing it at her head – then landing a punch to her face.
BB Gun Frightens Police and Public
The shocking incident unfolded on February 4th on St James’ Street. Armed officers quickly swooped in, recovering the weapon, which looked like a real Sig Sauer P226 but was actually a BB gun. PC Kerri Trickey, unaware the gun was fake during the ordeal, suffered a cut above her eye and needed hospital treatment.
Lockdown Drama Started at School
The chaos began earlier at the Island Learning Centre on Newport Road. The teen pointed the BB gun at another student, forcing the school into lockdown. After fleeing, she was confronted outside Halifax in the town centre.
Youth Court Hands Down Tough Sentence
Appearing in Isle of Wight Youth Court on Wednesday, the girl pled guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear and assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH).
Magistrates sentenced her to an 18-month youth detention training order. She will serve half her time in a Young Offender Institution and the rest under community supervision by the Youth Offending Team.
Police Slam Attack on Officers
Chief Inspector Rob Brind said: “This was understandably a concerning incident for the victims, who initially thought the weapon was a viable firearm.
“Officers respond based on the information they have, and we hope the public are reassured that we act swiftly to protect everyone’s safety.
“We also want to thank the member of the public who helped detain the suspect after our officer was assaulted.
“Assaults on police officers will not be tolerated. Our officers face tough situations regularly, but no one has the right to abuse them physically or verbally.”
The teen had appeared in court before for another serious Isle of Wight incident.
