Rapist Jailed for 9 Years After Attack in Wigan Alley
Brutal Attack in Wigan Town Centre
Ablolom Okbazge, a man with no fixed address, was locked up for nine years at Bolton Crown Court yesterday. He was also added to the sex offenders register for life after being found guilty of raping a 37-year-old woman in Wigan.
The horrific attack took place in the early hours of Saturday 18 December 2021. The victim had been out with friends in Wigan town centre but got separated and was left alone while intoxicated. Okbazge approached her and led her down a dark alley off King Street to a secluded spot, where the assault happened.
Swift Arrest and Court Justice
Police arrested Okbazge the very next day at the Britannia Hotel in Standish. He was remanded in custody until his sentencing.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
Detective Constable Ray Williams from GMP’s Wigan division spoke out about the case:
“This has been a very traumatic ordeal for the victim from the moment she was approached in the street and led into an alleyway by Ablolom Okbazge, right up to the present day. What Okbazge did that day is likely to affect the victim for the rest of her life.” “I want to thank the victim for her resilience and bravery in reporting this heinous crime. Her courage has put a dangerous man behind bars and may have saved others from suffering the same fate.” “We hope this sentence brings some comfort to the victim and reassurance to the community that Okbazge cannot harm anyone else.” “Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate predatory behaviour. We want all women and girls to feel safe walking the streets across our towns and city.” “You may notice more officers on patrol, especially at night, as part of our crackdown on crime targeting vulnerable people.”
