Carlisle Man Jailed for Savage Assault and Threats to Kill

Dean Ronald Haughan, 31, from Hartington Place, Carlisle, has been slammed with a seven-year jail sentence plus a two-year extended licence for assault and threats to kill.

Guilty After Violent Three-Day Trial

Haughan initially pleaded guilty to assault and threats but denied false imprisonment and sexual offence charges. A jury at Carlisle Crown Court found him guilty on all counts after a tense three-day trial ending on 23rd November.

Horrific Attack Caught on CCTV

The ordeal began on 12th May 2021 when two women known to Haughan visited his flat. CCTV footage showed one woman being violently shoved out in the early hours of 13th May. The other woman was trapped inside and subjected to a brutal six-hour spree of sexual and violent attacks.

During the trial, chilling footage revealed Haughan menacing the trapped victim with a knife.

Detective Speaks Out on Disturbing Case

“This was a particularly sinister case. Haughan subjected one victim to multiple, serious attacks spanning six hours, whilst she was forcibly imprisoned in his flat,” said Detective Chief Inspector Vicki Coombes, Force lead for Rape and Serious Sexual Offences.

“Throughout the incident he showed no regard for the woman or her welfare.

“I would like to thank the victims in this case. They have shown true courage and determination in supporting our investigation and ensuring the offender was held to account for his vile actions.”

“Violence and sexual offending is never tolerated in Cumbria. There is no place for it. This case highlights how seriously we take reports of violent and sexual offences.

“To anyone who has been the victim or survivor of a sexual or violent offence, I urge you to report it so we can support you and bring offenders to justice.”

Specialist officers handle all reports with sensitivity. Victims can also access free local support services, whether or not they choose to involve the police.
