Carer Caught on CCTV ‘Man-Handling’ Disabled Patient Before His Death
Dami Tobi Ayan, from Kensington Place, has admitted ill treatment and wilful neglect of Ben King at Cawston Park Hospital in July 2020.
Ben, who had Down’s syndrome, severe learning disabilities, and mental health issues, was violently manhandled by Ayan, a court heard. CCTV footage showed Ayan push Ben to the floor, drag him by the arms, then strike him around the head with an open hand—not once, but twice after checking no one was around.
Ben Dies Hours After Assault
Tragically, Ben died later that day from a cardiac arrest. While the assault was not linked to his death, the abuse only came to light after the CCTV was reviewed by investigators.
Abuse Was No Secret: Witnesses Speak Out
Eyewitnesses told police Ayan often shouted abuse at Ben, calling him “baby” and “disgusting” while intimidating the vulnerable man.
Ayan was charged by police in September 2021 following a public appeal after earlier efforts to find him fell short.
Detective Demands Justice for Vulnerable Victim
“Ayan was in a position of trust and was meant to care for Ben who was extremely vulnerable and had limited means of protecting himself,” said Detective Inspector Sam Pontin. “This trust was abused and it’s important Ayan faces justice for this.”
Ayan appeared at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday 5 April for sentencing after pleading guilty earlier.
