Fatal Hit-and-Run on A149: Woman Killed, Teen Injured
Tragedy struck just before 4.30pm on Sunday, July 31, 2022, when a silver Lexus SUV smashed into two pedestrians on the A149 in Stalham, between Stepping Stone Lane and Old Market Road.
Shockingly, the driver didn’t stop after the first collision. Instead, the car sped down the A149 and crashed into a road sign near Tesco.
20-Year-Old Woman Dies at Scene
Emergency crews found a 20-year-old woman at the scene, later identified as Fenella Hawes. She was pronounced dead on impact. Police have confirmed her identity pending a formal Coroner’s 1.
Teen Girl Seriously Hurt, Driver in Custody
The second pedestrian, a 16-year-old girl, suffered a serious arm injury and was rushed to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. She has since been released.
The driver, Malcolm Waite, 68, from Meadow Drive, Hoveton, was taken to James Paget Hospital in Gorleston with minor injuries. He was later arrested and held at Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
Charged with Dangerous Driving Causing Death
Waite faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving on the A149. He appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 2, and was remanded in custody.
His next hearing is scheduled for September 6, 2022, at Norwich Crown Court.
