Tragic Crash Claims Life of Motorcyclist After Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel
At around 1:30pm on May 19, 2019, Stewart Anthony’s Toyota Yaris collided head-on with a Triumph motorcycle on New Road, Burnley. The rider, Chris Raw, 62, from Huddersfield, died instantly at the scene despite paramedics’ efforts.
The road was shut for six hours while collision investigators combed the scene.
Driver Jailed and Banned For Causing Death by Careless Driving
Today, Preston Crown Court handed down a suspended sentence to Stewart Anthony of Binns Lane, Glusburn, Keighley. He was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, for causing death by careless driving. Anthony also received a four-month curfew and a five-year driving ban. He must pass an extended retest before getting back behind the wheel.
During the trial, it emerged that Anthony had nodded off after a meal out with his wife. His car drifted into the opposite lane, crashing into Mr Raw’s motorcycle as he rode in the other direction.
Despite attempts by Mr Raw to avoid the crash, Anthony’s late steering adjustments led to the fatal collision.
Sleep Apnoea Diagnosis Highlights Dangers of Driving Tired
Following the crash, Anthony was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea—a condition that disrupts sleep and causes severe tiredness.
Sgt Lee Harris of Lancashire’s Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic case where a motorcyclist out riding with his friends has lost his life as a result of a preventable collision.”
“My thoughts are very much with Mr Raw’s family at this time. Nothing can compensate for the loss of a life, but I hope that today’s sentencing can offer his loved ones some form of closure and a chance to begin their grieving process.”
“The case sadly shows the devastating consequences of driving when not fit to do so. Driving while tired is extremely dangerous – taking breaks can save lives.”
