Southend Predator Jailed for 27 Years Over Decade-Long Child Abuse Spree
Andrew Cocks, 54, from Oakleigh Avenue, Southend, has been slammed behind bars for 27 years after abusing children and teens over more than a decade starting in the early 2000s.
Victims Speak Out After Years of Silence
The victims were kids and teenagers when the assaults happened. They bravely came forward as adults to report Cocks’ horrific crimes. He faced 25 charges, including 11 counts of rape, at Basildon Crown Court.
Claims of Innocence Crumble Under Evidence
Cocks insisted he was innocent, blaming his “significant mobility issues” for the accusations. But at trial, evidence destroyed his defence. The jury found him guilty of 13 charges unanimously.
“Abuse of any kind should never happen but when it does, we’re here to make sure that the perpetrator answers for his crimes,” said Detective Sergeant Pitchford, head of Essex Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT).
“Cocks knew that the children trusted and relied on him, and he made them believe it was a choice. He would even buy them toys and take them away if they refused his abuse.
“Grooming and abuse is categorically never a choice by a victim. If you’ve been made to feel that way, please contact us or reach out to someone for support. You will be taken seriously and you will be believed.”
