Burglar Caught After Dramatic Co-op Break-In in Bedlington
Mark Cranston, 25, is behind bars after a smashing raid on the Co-op in Bedlington’s Netherton Lane on the evening of Saturday, March 25.
Store Raided, Quick Escape Foiled by Police Dog Ace
Cranston and a partner forced their way into the store, grabbing alcohol and meat before making a run for it. Cranston fled on foot while his accomplice sped off on a bike.
But police were on the scene fast. Cranston was spotted trying to slip into nearby woods — just where Police Dog Ace and his handler, Sergeant Adam Fegan, were waiting.
The three-year-old Dutch Herder tracked Cranston’s scent for over a mile. The chase led through thick woods and over a fence into a housing estate, where Cranston was found hiding in a bush and promptly arrested.
Swiped Goods Recovered, Burglar Jailed for 24 Weeks
Officers retrieved all the stolen goods discarded by the duo. Cranston, who has no fixed address, later pleaded guilty to burglary in Bedlington Magistrates’ Court and was slammed with a 24-week jail term.
Police Praise Teamwork and Dog Unit’s Heroics
Chief Inspector Ian Cutty said, “This was a fantastic outcome with a burglar arrested, charged and jailed all within 48 hours. It was a real team effort by all officers involved as well as our partners across the criminal justice system.”
“Not only were we able to retrieve the stolen items, but this case once again highlighted the outstanding contribution that our Dog Section make in the detection and prevention of crime.”
“Police Dog Ace tracked Cranston’s movements for over a mile, leading his handler and officers right to his uncomfortable hiding spot in a bush. I’m sure Ace earned a few extra treats following his shift.”
“We will continue to tackle burglars hard and do everything we can to put them before the courts. I’d like to thank the public and our businesses for their ongoing support and cooperation.”
