Man Arrested After Two Shocking Attacks on Ipswich River Towpath
Police have swooped on a 24-year-old man following two terrifying assaults in Ipswich. The latest attack rocked the riverside towpath late on Thursday, December 8.
Girl in Late Teens Attacked on River Towpath
The victim, a girl in her late teens, was walking near Tower Mill Road around 11.40pm when a man suddenly grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground. Luckily, a passerby disrupted the attack, forcing the suspect to flee toward Riverside Road and Sproughton Road.
Second Incident Dates Back to October 2021
Back on Sunday, October 17, 2021, between 3.10am and 3.20am, a young woman was targeted in the courtyard of an apartment block called Foundry, The Mill on College Street. The man approached her while she was strolling along the waterfront near Stoke Bridge, tried to start a conversation, then chased and assaulted her when she tried to get away.
Suspect Charged and Remanded
On Thursday, December 15, officers arrested Adiley Pires of Kensington Road, Ipswich. He faces five charges including:
- Attempted rape, sexual assault, and common assault for the December 2022 attack
- Attempted rape and sexual assault relating to the October 2021 assault
Pires has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today.
