Gym thief nabbed after stealing Audi keys and car
Crime caught on CCTV
Nigel Charles Withers, 58, from Sussex Street, Winchester, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft at Winchester Crown Court on 31 March.
On 2 March 2023, between 4am and 6am, Withers slipped into Anytime Fitness in Crown Heights by tailgating a gym member. Inside, he swiped valuables from a member’s coat left in the gym area.
Audi car stolen using stolen keys
Among the haul was the key to an Audi T Quattro parked outside. Withers didn’t waste time and took the car for a joyride.
Arrest and evidence
Police identified Withers on CCTV and arrested him on 9 March, thanks to Winchester High Harm Team. A search of his home uncovered the jacket he wore during the crime and a stolen entry fob.
Sentence handed down
Withers was remanded in custody and appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 10 March. He was sentenced to 12 months for burglary and 20 months for motor vehicle theft, to run concurrently.
