Knuckleduster Charge Lands Newport Man in Court

Keelan Hobbs, 21, from Barton Road, Newport, faced Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday for carrying an offensive weapon – a knuckleduster. He had already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

Caught with Weapon at Local Spot

Prosecutor Ann Smout revealed Hobbs was spotted with the knuckleduster on June 4th at Howard 1 on Barton Road. Staff quickly alerted authorities. When questioned, Hobbs admitted he carried it for self-defence, saying: “I’m dead if you take it.”

Defence Cites Previous Attack and Mental Health

Defence lawyer Amy Hosell explained that Hobbs had been run over and beaten just days before the incident. She claimed he carried the weapon out of fear and had no intention of using it. Hobbs received the knuckleduster months earlier.

Miss Hosell also noted Hobbs’ previous convictions for possession of a bladed article (November 2020) and breaching a restraining order (November 2021). She added he had battled depression, anxiety, and ADHD but was now in a “more positive place” and off medication.

Community Order Reinstated with Tough Conditions

The court revoked Hobbs’ existing community order and issued a new 12-month order. This includes 20 rehabilitation days and 300 hours of unpaid work. He was also fined £85 in court costs plus a £95 surcharge.
