Police were called just before 7pm after reports of an assault. CCTV footage showed Claydon standing with others when Pearson approached. Without warning, Claydon punched Pearson to the ground and then stamped on him while he lay unconscious.

Matthew staggered back to his nearby flat seriously injured and confused, bleeding from his ear. Despite urgent hospital treatment and transfer to Royal Preston Hospital, he succumbed to blunt head trauma on August 2.

  • Key investigation pieces included CCTV, witness testimonies, forensic exams, and pathology reports proving Claydon caused Matthew’s fatal injuries.
  • Claydon admitted manslaughter but denied murder. The jury convicted him after trial at Preston Crown Court.

Tributes to a Gentle Soul

Detective Inspector Mark Dickinson called the attack “callous and cowardly” and said the motive remains unknown as Claydon gave no reason for the savage assault.

Matthew’s family said: “Matthew was a kind, gentle and intelligent man with a smile you’d never forget. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and was rarely seen without a book in hand. His passion for history and his sharp wit made him a true old soul. This is a heartbreaking loss for all who knew him.”
