Monster jailed for 17 years after 14 years of abuse on victim from age 18

Umar Hamid’s twisted reign of terror

Umar Hamid, 29, subjected a woman to brutal abuse for 14 years starting when she was just 18. Most of the horrific attacks happened between 2006 and 2013, but the nightmare only came to light in spring 2020 when the now 32-year-old victim finally reported him to police.

Hamid was arrested in May this year and convicted at Preston Crown Court for 11 offences—ranging from rape and assault to firearms charges. The crimes were committed at homes in Blackburn and nearby areas.

Justice served at Burnley Crown Court

Today, justice caught up with Hamid as he was slammed with a 17-year prison sentence plus a five-year extended licence after Judge David Potter declared him a dangerous offender. He must also sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and adhere to a lifetime restraining order preventing any contact with his victim.

Police praise victim’s bravery

Detective Inspector Tom Edmondson of Lancashire Police said: “Hamid subjected his victim to an ordeal of physical and sexual abuse over many years. I want to pay tribute to her courage for coming forward and supporting the court process.” “I hope today’s sentence brings some consolation to the victim and encourages others suffering abuse to report it, knowing Lancashire Police will act with professionalism and sensitivity to protect victims and lock up offenders.”

CPS slams ‘bully’ Hamid’s attempts to escape justice

Crown Prosecutor Brett Gerrity said: “Umar Hamid is a bully who used horrific physical and sexual violence to control a woman. Despite trying to discredit the victim throughout the case, his fear tactics failed.” “Thanks to her immense courage and the hard work of the CPS and police, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts. This tough sentence reflects the prolonged suffering he caused and the danger he poses to the community. The victim can sleep safely now, knowing he has been brought to justice.”
