Brutal Abuser Jailed for 17 Years After 14-Year Ordeal

Umar Hamid’s Reign of Terror Exposed

Umar Hamid subjected a woman to horrific abuse over 14 years, starting when she was just 18. Most of the vile attacks happened between 2006 and 2013, but the nightmare came roaring back in spring 2020 when the victim, now 32, finally reported him to the police.

Convicted of Rape, Assault and More

Hamid, 29, formerly of Hazel Avenue, Darwen, was arrested in May this year. Following a Preston Crown Court trial, he was convicted of 11 offences including rape, assault and firearms charges. The abuse took place at properties in Burnley and Blackburn.

Lengthy Prison Sentence and Lifetime Ban

Hamid was locked up today for 17 years at Burnley Crown Court. Judge David Potter declared him a dangerous offender, adding a five-year extended licence period after release. Hamid must also sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and abide by a lifetime restraining order banning any contact with his victim.

Police and Prosecutors Praise Victim’s Bravery

Detective Inspector Tom Edmondson said: “Hamid subjected his victim to an ordeal of physical and sexual abuse over many years. I pay tribute to her courage in coming forward and supporting the court process.”

“I hope this sentence brings her some consolation and encourages others suffering abuse to seek help, knowing Lancashire Police will act with professionalism and sensitivity to protect victims and secure justice.”

Brett Gerrity from the Crown Prosecution Service added: “Umar Hamid is a bully who used horrendous violence to control a woman. He tried to challenge her story throughout, thinking he was untouchable.”

“Thanks to her immense bravery, the CPS and police built a strong case. The unanimous guilty verdicts show the jury knew who was telling the truth.”

“This sentence reflects the prolonged suffering Hamid caused and the threat he poses to the community. The victim can sleep safely knowing he’s behind bars.”
