75-Year-Old Pensioner Convicted of 1975 Rape and Murder of Teenage Niece

Dennis McGrory, 75, from Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, has been found guilty for the horrific rape and murder of 15-year-old Jackie Montgomery in Islington back in 1975. The jury at Huntingdon Crown Court delivered the verdict on Monday, 19 December. Sentencing is set for Friday, 13 January.

DNA Breakthrough Cracks Cold Case After 46 Years

The conviction overturns McGrory’s original acquittal nearly five decades ago, thanks to a forensic breakthrough. A Met Police review and advanced DNA analysis revealed genetic material on Jackie that was one billion times more likely to belong to McGrory than anyone else.

The new DNA evidence led the Court of Appeal to quash the old verdict and order a re-trial under double jeopardy laws.

Police Praise Tech Advances and Tireless Detectives

Detective Constable Jane Mascall, Met Specialist Casework Team: “Back in 1975, DNA testing didn’t exist. Despite McGrory being acquitted then, we never gave up. Modern forensic science uncovered his DNA on Jackie’s swab, allowing us to finally bring him to justice. I hope this verdict brings some comfort to Jackie’s family, especially her sister Kathy who fought for decades to keep this case alive.”

Detective Superintendent Rebecca Reeves: “This conviction shows we won’t rest until justice is served, no matter how long it takes. McGrory was a violent man who terrorised the women around him. Thanks to skilled detectives and forensic experts, he’s now held accountable for a brutal crime that shattered a young life.”

Jackie’s Family Reacts to Long-Awaited Justice

Jackie’s sister Kathy: “We said we could trust no one. A violent man in our family raped and murdered my sister and then lived freely for nearly 50 years. It’s unbearable. This investigation dredged up painful memories but finally brings justice for Jackie.”

The Grim Crime Scene & Chilling Details

Jackie’s body was found by her father on 2 June 1975 in their Islington home. She had been stabbed several times, strangled with an iron flex, and suffered blunt force trauma. The scene showed signs of a struggle and sexual assault. The phone was off the hook, suggesting Jackie tried to call for help.

McGrory was Jackie’s aunt’s ex-long-term partner. He had been arrested soon after the murder, with visible injuries from the attack, including a bruised lip and scratches. He was charged but acquitted at trial.

Cold Case Review Leads to Second Arrest

In 2015, the Met’s Specialist Casework Team reopened the cold case at the family’s request. Forensic advances identified McGrory’s DNA on evidence from the crime scene. He was re-arrested in March 2020 and charged again in June 2020, 45 years after the brutal attack.

McGrory, then 28, had been drinking heavily before turning up at Jackie’s home, likely seeking revenge on her aunt who had left him following his abusive behaviour. Unable to find the aunt, he took out his anger on Jackie.

He even carried a torn page from Jackie’s diary—used as evidence—which contained threats and disturbing comments McGrory made in the past, including threats of sexual violence towards Jackie.

Detectives stress that this case sends a strong message to domestic abusers today about relentless police efforts to protect women and children and deliver justice, no matter how much time passes.
