76-Year-Old Man Charged After Boys Fed Sedative-Laced Sweets at Summer Camp
Shocking Incident at Leicester Summer Camp
A 76-year-old man was arrested after allegedly giving sweets laced with sedatives to boys aged 8 to 11 at a summer camp in Leicester. Eight children and one adult were rushed to hospital as a precaution but have since been discharged.
The suspect, named Ruben, was caught at a local pub and appeared in court for a brief hearing. He only confirmed his name, date of birth, and address before being remanded in custody. Ruben is due back at 1 Crown Court on 29 August.
Police Raid and Community Shock
Detectives have been seen hauling bags of evidence from Ruben’s home in Ruddington, nottingham/" title="Nottingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Nottingham. Neighbours expressed disbelief:
“He is a lovely guy, and they are a lovely couple. We’re hoping it is all a terrible mistake.”
Leicestershire Police stressed that Stathern Lodge’s owners are independent of the summer camp organisers and not linked to the incident.
CPS Confirms Child Cruelty Charges
Janine McKinney, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, said:
“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the prosecution of a 76-year-old man with child cruelty offences following a police investigation into a summer camp held at Stathern Lodge. This has been an extremely upsetting and shocking moment for the community, and especially for the children and parents most directly affected.”

The CPS urged the public to be cautious with their comments and reminded everyone that active criminal proceedings are underway. They warned against anything that could jeopardise a fair trial for the accused.
