A man has been slammed with an 18-year jail sentence for raping a woman in a field as she walked home from a night out in Cornwall.

Monster Caught in Cornwall

Eugen Simion, 21, a Romanian national residing on Praze Road, Camborne, was sentenced at Truro Crown Court on Monday, 18 August. The court found him guilty of rape following a gripping trial.

Brutal Attack in the Dead of Night

At around 1.40am on 2 February 2025, the victim, barefoot and muddy, staggered into Camborne Police Station, visibly shaken.

She told officers she had been raped in a nearby field about 30 minutes earlier. The victim had been out in Camborne town centre but, when she couldn’t get a taxi, she started walking home. CCTV footage showed her unsteady on her feet before an unknown man tried to kiss her. She pushed him away, but later remembered being attacked in a dark field.

When she arrived at the police station, she noticed several items missing from her handbag. Officers later recovered some possessions after a careful search of the scene.

Quick Police Work Nets Simion

Detectives launched an intense hunt for the attacker, identifying Simion through CCTV enquiries. He was arrested on 6 February.

During interviews, Simion claimed he’d been drinking and met the victim, who he said appeared drunk. He alleged the woman initiated sex but asked him to stop, which he claimed he did.

Simion admitted running from the scene, saying it was late and cold. He also confessed to taking the woman’s bank card, claiming he mistook it for his own in the darkness.

Jury Slams Simion with Conviction

The jury rejected his version of events and found Simion guilty of rape, sending a strong message that such horrific crimes will not go unpunished.
