Chocolate thief to spend Easter behind bars after £190 shoplifting spree! Serial shoplifter Winston Wright, 43, nabbed over £190 worth of Easter treats from Sainsbury’s stores in Deptford and Creek Road last month. The chocolate heist included dozens of Easter eggs and bars just weeks before the holiday.

Three Strikes and Out

  • On March 12, Wright swiped two boxes of Easter chocolate bars worth more than £50 from Sainsbury’s on Deptford High Street.
  • Two days later, March 14, he hit another Sainsbury’s on Creek Road and stole £70 worth of Easter eggs.
  • Not done yet, Wright returned on March 19 to the same Creek Road store and nabbed an extra £75 in chocolate bars.

Guilty as Charged

Wright was arrested and pleaded guilty on March 25 at Croydon Magistrates’ Court to all three thefts. He also admitted to failing to provide a sample for a Class A drugs test, violating rules of the Drug Intervention Programme.

Sentencing Set for May

Initially due for sentencing on April 5, Wright’s hearing was postponed for a pre-sentence report. He will now be sentenced on May 6. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police confirmed Wright remains in custody over Easter.

Local Outrage Over Seasonal Shoplifting

The thefts come amid rising concerns from retailers about a spike in stealing high-value seasonal goods like Easter chocolate. Shoppers in Deptford expressed anger and sadness.

“It’s sad to see people stealing Easter eggs—it’s meant to be a time for families, not crime.”

The court will factor in Wright’s past convictions and substance misuse issues when deciding his punishment next month.
