Woman Jailed for Life Over Chilling Double Murder of Her Parents
Virginia McCullough, 36, has been locked up for life after brutally killing her parents, John and Lois McCullough. The Chelmsford Crown Court handed down the sentence on Friday, October 11, 2024, ending a lengthy probe by Essex Police’s Serious Crime Directorate.
Poisoning, Stabbing and a Twisted Web of Lies
The horrific crimes happened in summer 2019 but only surfaced in September 2023 when the family GP grew suspicious after the couple missed multiple appointments. Police uncovered human remains at their home in Pump Hill, Great Baddow. Autopsies revealed John was poisoned with prescription meds, while Lois suffered the same poisoning and was brutally beaten with a hammer and stabbed to death.
Cold-Blooded Killer and Her Deceptive Motives
Detective Superintendent Rob Kirby labelled McCullough “an intelligent manipulator” who committed the offences “in cold blood.” The investigation exposed years of fraud, as she racked up huge debts using her parents’ names and drained their pension funds even after they were dead.
“McCullough lied about almost every aspect of her life, maintaining a charade to deceive everyone close to her and clearly taking advantage of her parents’ goodwill,” said DS Kirby.
Family Left Shattered
The devastated extended family paid tribute to John, remembering him as a caring, hardworking man passionate about education. Lois was honoured as a kind, thoughtful grandmother who doted on her grandchildren.
Nicola Rice, Specialist Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was a truly disturbing case, which has left behind it a trail of devastation.”
