Woman Jailed for Killing Grandfather in Horror Clacton Crash
A 35-year-old woman has been jailed after admitting responsibility for a fatal smash that claimed the life of an 84-year-old “adventure-loving” grandfather in Clacton.
Kelly Cox, from Holmwood Close, was sentenced to 33 months behind bars and banned from driving for more than six years after her release.
Tragic Crash on St John’s Road
The horror collision happened just before midday on Saturday, April 11, 2020, near the junction of Jaywick Lane. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a crash between a BMW and a Citroen.
Despite paramedics’ efforts, Citroen driver Norman Austin sadly died at the scene. Kelly Cox, who was behind the wheel of the BMW, was arrested shortly after.
Investigation Uncovers Drug-Impaired Driving
Road policing officers closed the road for six and a half hours while they carried out a thorough investigation. It was revealed Cox’s driving was impaired by prescription drugs at the time of the smash.
She was charged with causing Mr. Austin’s death by dangerous driving and faced trial at chelmsford/" title="Chelmsford" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court in November 2022.
Justice Served at Chelmsford Crown Court
On November 23, 2023, Cox was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court. Detective Sergeant Alex Black offered heartfelt condolences to Mr. Austin’s family.
“The driver responsible for Norman Austin’s premature death has been brought to justice,” said Detective Sergeant Black.
Mr. Austin was remembered fondly by the community, known for his adventurous spirit and deeply missed at local tributes, including the Cenotaph in London.
