A drug-fuelled smash on the A26 has landed a 30-year-old driver behind bars for six years after killing a woman and seriously injuring two others.

Hit-and-Run Horror on the A26

Niall O’Malley was tearing down Ringmer’s A26 in his black Audi S3 on the evening of 26 May 2024. At 7.25pm, he veered into the wrong lane and slammed head-on into a Peugeot 2008 carrying a couple from Uckfield.

The Peugeot’s female driver suffered catastrophic injuries and died in hospital four days later. Her 30-year-old partner survived but remains seriously hurt.

Over the Limit: Cannabis Behind the Wheel

O’Malley, from Nevill Road, Uckfield, and his 24-year-old passenger were both badly injured. Tests revealed he had 2.9 microgrammes of cannabis per litre of blood—well over the legal limit of 2.

At Hove Crown Court on 28 November, O’Malley admitted causing death and serious injury by careless driving under the influence. He was jailed for six years and banned from driving for 89 months.

Judge Slams ‘Avoidable Distraction’

Judge Gold blasted the crash as a result of a “brief but avoidable distraction” with “tragic” consequences. O’Malley’s sentence was cut from eight years due to his early guilty plea.

Police Warn: Don’t Drive High

“No matter how competent a driver you think you may be, illegal drugs such as cannabis can significantly impair your ability to drive safely,” said Acting Detective Inspector Rob Baldwin.

“They can remain in your system far longer than alcohol. Taking others in the car while under the influence is even more irresponsible – their lives are in your hands.”

Detectives praised the victims’ families for their strength and highlighted the case as part of Operation Ohio, Sussex Police’s crackdown on dangerous driving.
