Deeside Grandparents Jailed for Murder of Toddler Ethan Ives-Griffiths

Grim Verdict After Six-Week Trial

A Deeside grandfather and grandmother have been found guilty of murdering their two-year-old grandson, Ethan Ives-Griffiths. The chilling case unfolded at Mold Crown Court after a six-week trial exposed a shocking pattern of child cruelty and abuse.

  • Michael Ives, 47, and Kerry Ives, 46, both of Kingsley Road, Garden City, were convicted of murder and child cruelty.
  • Ethan’s mother, Shannon Ives, 28, from Nant Garmon, Mold, was found guilty of causing or allowing his death.

Toddlers’ Abuse Shocks the Nation

The court heard how Ethan suffered sustained neglect, brutal punishments, and terrifying assaults at the hands of those meant to protect him. When toddler Ethan failed to obey Michael Ives, the punishments escalated.

“Michael, Kerry and Shannon Ives held positions of responsibility and should have shown Ethan love, care and protection. Instead, Michael caused distress, pain and misery to his grandson before his very eyes. It is impossible to imagine the horror a two-year-old must have felt enduring the horrific injuries he sustained.” – Detective Superintendent Chris Bell

Seven Weeks of Horror

Evidence revealed a tragic deterioration in Ethan’s health over seven weeks. Despite clear signs of abuse, his family failed to act, allowing his suffering to worsen until his untimely death.

Community Calls for End to Child Abuse

Detective Superintendent Bell praised Ethan’s paternal family for their “immense strength and courage” throughout the ordeal. He added, “This case is a stark reminder of the tragic consequences when children are let down by those they trust.”

Justice has been served, but the pain of Ethan’s loss will linger in the community for years.
