Man Arrested Over Deadly Channel Dinghy Tragedy
A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Gloucestershire for his alleged role in the deaths of at least 27 migrants who drowned crossing the English Channel last November.
Harem Ahmed Abwbaker was busted by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers and the National Extradition Unit at a Cheltenham address early this morning, around 6:45am.
Deadly Dinghy Capsizes in Channel
Abwbaker is suspected to be part of an organised crime gang that masterminded transporting migrants on a tiny boat from France to the UK. The vessel sank shortly after leaving the French coast, killing everyone onboard except two survivors. Four people remain missing.
The NCA has worked closely with French authorities to track down Abwbaker and unravel the details behind the tragedy.
Justice for Families
Following his arrest, Abwbaker will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow where extradition proceedings will begin.
NCA Deputy Director Craig Turner said: “This is a significant arrest, part of extensive inquiries into the tragic Channel deaths. The individual detained today is suspected of playing a key role in the manslaughter of those who died. We are determined to get justice for the families and dismantle these cruel people-smuggling gangs.”
Home Secretary Suella Braverman added: “My thoughts remain with the families who lost loved ones in this horrendous incident. I thank the NCA and partners in the UK and France for their tireless work to bring those responsible to justice and ensure they face the full force of the law.”
This arrest marks a major breakthrough in the fight against deadly people smuggling across the Channel. Authorities vow to keep hunting those responsible for risking vulnerable lives at sea.
