Suspect in Custody After Market Mayhem

Musse Ali, 66, appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court charged with McLeggan’s murder, two attempted murders, and knife possession. Speaking through a Somali interpreter, Ali, who has no fixed address, confirmed his identity. He was remanded in custody and will face a bail hearing at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, with a plea hearing set for December 10.

Heroic Stallholders Step In to Stop Violence

The attack erupted around 10:40am, reportedly ending only when market stallholders armed with metal bars confronted the alleged attacker, holding him off until police arrived. One of the injured men remains in critical condition, while the other is seriously wounded.

Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh called the incident “horrific” and praised the “brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene.”

Scotland Yard confirmed the hammering isn’t terror-related and urged the public to avoid speculation. The 16th-century East Street Market, a historic trading spot, has been rocked by violence. Authorities have informed Mr McLeggan’s family and are providing specialist support.

Police have increased patrols in Walworth to reassure residents and businesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting case number 2690/10Nov.
