Fake ID Maker Jailed for Nearly Four Years in People Smuggling Crackdown

A 43-year-old man has been locked up for producing fake identity documents used by organised crime gangs involved in people smuggling. Radouane Bouhafs, an Algerian national, was sentenced to three years and nine months after a National Crime Agency (NCA) probe.

Forgery Factory Raided in North London

In June 2024, NCA officers swooped on Bouhafs’ home in Edmonton, North London. Hidden in an outbuilding was a forgery workshop stacked with printers, computers, blank cards, and tools to create counterfeit IDs.

  • Fake documents seized included Irish and French EU passports, Irish and Italian ID cards, UK Security Industry Authority licences, plus UK, Italian, and Belgian driving licences.

Links to People Smuggling Network Revealed

Bouhafs was caught during a wider NCA investigation into a people smuggling gang. He churned out false IDs that let illegal immigrants work, claim benefits, and access services in the UK. Financial checks showed he pocketed tens of thousands of pounds with no legitimate income.

He pleaded guilty to seven counts of possessing bogus documents and one count of possessing forgery tools at Wood Green Crown Court on July 25, before being sentenced on August 15.

NCA: Key Player in Organised Immigration Crime

“Radouane Bouhafs worked on behalf of organised crime groups, providing them with false documents that made it appear the holders were legally in the UK,” said NCA Senior Investigating Officer John Turner.

“These fake IDs enabled renting property, opening bank accounts, claiming benefits, and getting work. His services were vital to the criminal gangs and factored into smuggling fees. Tackling organised immigration crime remains a top priority for the NCA.”

This case shines a light on continued law enforcement efforts to smash criminal networks fueling illegal immigration and the fake document trade that supports wider crime.
