Ex-GP Jailed for 10 Years Over Shocking Patient Abuse
A disgraced former doctor from Guildford has been sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting patients at his surgery. Alan Tutin, 71, abused his position as a GP to prey on vulnerable women over more than two decades.
Decades of Abuse Uncovered
Tutin, of Matfield, Kent, was found guilty of 15 counts of sexual assault after a lengthy trial at the Central Criminal Court in London. His crimes, committed between 1981 and 2004, mostly took place at the Merrow Park Practice in Guildford, where he worked from 1980.
The victims, aged between 12 and 46, trusted him as their doctor. Many assaults were disguised as breast or vaginal exams – either unnecessary or done in an inappropriate way for his own sexual gratification.
Victims Speak Out About Betrayal
“My initial response was a sense of being abused, violated and feeling dirty, and wanting a shower.”
One victim described feeling “confused, embarrassed and nauseous” after what she thought was a routine appointment. Another said, “I trusted him as a doctor and was brought up to respect authority and do as I was told, which is what I did.”
Several survivors called Tutin a “predator” whose actions shattered their trust in male doctors forever. They revealed how he exploited their innocence and the medical setting to commit his crimes.
Investigation and Justice Served
The probe began in March 2014 after victims came forward. Tutin was arrested in July that year. Police charged him with 27 counts involving 25 complainants, but he was found guilty on 15 counts. He was acquitted on seven counts, and the jury couldn’t decide on five others. A second trial cleared him of the remaining charges.
“Alan Tutin completely abused his position to sexually assault his female patients over a long period of time,”
said Detective Chief Inspector Richard Haycock, head of the investigation. “I have nothing but praise for the victims who found the courage to speak out despite initial fear and embarrassment.”
He added: “I hope this sentence gives victims confidence that allegations against people in positions of trust will always be taken seriously, no matter how much time has passed.”
Surrey Police’s Complex Abuse Unit were praised for their dedication in bringing Tutin to justice after a five-year investigation.
