Ex-Warwickshire Detective Slapped with Jail Time for Assault in Nantwich

A former Warwickshire Police Detective Sergeant, Paul Whitehurst, has been sentenced after admitting to assaulting a woman in Nantwich. The 53-year-old appeared at Chester Crown Court on Monday 29 July and was jailed for 18 weeks. On top of that, he’s banned from setting foot in Nantwich for the next 10 years.

Multiple Assaults and Restraining Order Breach

Whitehurst, from Barony Road, Nantwich, also received an indefinite restraining order stopping any contact with the victim. He pleaded guilty to four counts of section 39 assault, related to incidents occurring from October to December 2023.

  • He pushed the woman across a caravan after a falling out.
  • He verbally abused her and threw a pint over her at a pub when she spoke to another man.
  • He pinned her to the floor following a further disagreement.

Police Betrayal: Detective Sgt. Ignored Standards

“Police officers are placed in a position of trust and there are clear guidelines about the standards expected from them, both in and out of work,” said Detective Constable Lauren Constable of Cheshire Constabulary.

“Whitehurst, who once worked in Warwickshire Police’s Professional Standards Department, blatantly ignored these rules. His multiple assaults and breach of bail conditions are a betrayal of that trust.”

“I want to thank the victim for her bravery and hope the guilty plea brings her some peace. Cheshire Constabulary investigates all offences regardless of who the offender is. No one, including officers or staff, is above the law.”

Spot Whitehurst? Call Cheshire Police on 101
