Four Jailed in Crackdown on Rural Crime Spree in Cumbria

Detectives have smashed a gang behind a string of thefts across Keswick and Carlisle. Operation Damask, launched after nine incidents between February 2019 and October 2021, led to four men being arrested and jailed for stealing vehicles and breaking into businesses and farms.

Thieves Face Heavy Sentences

  • Patrick Young, 33 – No fixed address – slammed with three years and nine months for multiple vehicle thefts and burglaries.
  • Scott Walpole, 31 – Of Curzon Street – handed one year and nine months for motor vehicle theft and burglary.
  • Rhys Wilkinson, 20 – Of Coalfell Avenue, Carlisle – sentenced to one year and six months for vehicle theft and dangerous driving.
  • James Benson, 45 – Of Firlands, Carlisle – given a suspended sentence of one year and nine months over vehicle theft and burglary offences.

Rural Communities Targeted

Detective Constable Stuart Graham from the Crime and Safeguarding Team said: “Cumbria is a predominantly rural county and, unfortunately, opportunist criminals have targeted our rural communities.”

“These defendants hit multiple farms and businesses, stealing vehicles vital to local work. The impact has been serious. Some stolen vehicles ended up for sale in the North East while others were recovered locally.”

Graham added: “I hope today’s tough sentences reassure businesses and rural communities that we are tackling this crime head-on. Burglary and vehicle theft won’t be tolerated. Those responsible will face investigation and prosecution.”
