Three Men Jailed for Life Over Botched Revenge Shooting That Killed Innocent Granddad
Barry Dawson, 60, Murdered in Shocking Payback Attack
Barry Dawson, a 60-year-old granddad, was fatally shot through his living room window as children played outside. The horrific crime shook the quiet Stanley, County Durham neighbourhood on April 5.
After a fierce trial at Teesside Crown Court, ringleader Sean Reay, 30, along with his ‘key lieutenants’ Kelvin Lawson, 38, and Thomas Sterling, 22, were convicted of Barry’s murder.
Reay was handed a minimum 32-year sentence. Lawson and Sterling received minimum jail terms of 28 and 26 years respectively.
Revenge Attack Gone Horribly Wrong
The court heard Reay was out for revenge after a suspected drug dispute earlier the same day. He believed his attackers were inside Barry’s house and decided to strike back.
- Lawson smashed the downstairs window to give Reay a clear shot.
- Sterling stood guard outside, ready to intimidate.
- One bullet struck Barry in the chest, hitting his heart, lung, and liver, killing him instantly.
Barry was a cherished local who’d lived on the street for over 20 years. Doorbell camera footage chillingly caught the shooting and Barry’s son shouting: “They shot my dad.”
Justice Served but Grief Lingers
“This was an extraordinary crime in an ordinary residential street,” said Mr Justice Cotter. “The sort of thing people only see on TV or in films, and then not here.”
Barry’s partner, Sarah Hopwood, called him an “adored father and grandfather.” She added: “This horrendous crime has broken our hearts and it is something we will never recover from.”
Others involved in the getaway were also jailed:
- Driver Kevin Dorward: 20 months
- Accomplice Keith Dorward: 16 months
- Kevin’s partner Michaela Hetherington, jailed 15 months for lying to police
They all admitted trying to cover up the crime by destroying the stolen getaway car.
Detective Pledges Crackdown on Gun Crime
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Fuller vowed: “We will not tolerate such extreme violence on our streets. There is no place for guns here.”
“Barry Dawson needlessly lost his life because of these despicable actions. My thoughts remain with his loved ones.”
This brutal killing is a stark warning that any revenge shootings will face the full force of the law.
