Hertfordshire Police Officer Faces 45 Complaints – Still on the Job!

One Hertfordshire Constabulary officer has been hit with a staggering 45 complaint allegations across 18 cases in the past decade – yet remains employed. Shocking new figures revealed by a Freedom of Information (FOI) request expose a wider problem. Six officers within the force have faced at least 32 complaints each, but all six are still serving.

Complaint Shockers: Abuse, Discrimination and Use of Force

Hertfordshire police refuse to reveal the exact nature of the allegations due to data protection laws. But the complaints cover a worrying range of issues, including:

  • 33 claims of race discrimination
  • 22 claims of disability discrimination
  • 61 accusations of harassing or overbearing behaviour
  • 57 reports of unprofessional or disrespectful attitudes
  • 42 complaints about rude language or tone
  • 70 allegations involving use of force
  • 35 complaints relating to searches and property seizures

In the 2023/24 financial year alone, Hertfordshire Constabulary logged 1,523 complaint allegations against 641 officers. Despite this, only 21 officers were referred to misconduct proceedings—and just six faced accelerated hearings.

Public Outcry: Why Are Troubled Officers Still Serving?

The public and campaigners are outraged. Many ask: how can officers with dozens of complaints continue to patrol our streets? Calls for transparency and stronger disciplinary action are growing louder.

“Hertfordshire Constabulary expects the highest standards of behaviour from its officers and staff members. All allegations made to Hertfordshire Constabulary regarding its officers and staff members are taken very seriously and will be investigated.

If the complaints are serious and misconduct is discovered, officers and staff will face disciplinary procedures which can result in dismissal from the force. Complaint investigations can also result in no officer or staff misconduct being found.”

Demand for Tougher Oversight

The FOI findings have sparked renewed debate on police accountability in the UK. Critics say the current system fails when officers rack up repeat complaints without facing serious consequences.

Campaigners want the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to step in, reviewing policies on repeated complaints and ensuring no officer escapes scrutiny.

Questions remain over whether Hertfordshire Constabulary has properly investigated patterns of misconduct among these officers—and if any meaningful action has been taken.

The force insists it is committed to “integrity, professionalism, and public confidence.” Meanwhile, the public waits to see if that pledge translates into action.
