Ex-BBC Star Huw Edwards Caught in Child Image Scandal
The Met Police have named convicted paedophile Alex Williams as the source who shared indecent images of children with former BBC news anchor Huw Edwards.
Edwards Pleads Guilty to Creating and Sharing Child Abuse Images
Edwards, 62, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He pled guilty to three counts of making 41 indecent images of children. The explicit material was received from 25-year-old Williams, who is serving a 12-month sentence for possession and distribution of child abuse images.
Williams had confessed to possessing and distributing category A, B, and C indecent images at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court earlier this year.
Investigation Uncovered Edwards’ Role via WhatsApp Chats
The police probe into Edwards started after a separate search recovered incriminating evidence from a seized phone. Edwards had been part of a WhatsApp group exchanging indecent images.
Between December 2020 and August 2021, Edwards engaged in online chats with Williams, receiving 377 sexual images, 41 of which were indecent images of children. Seven of those were category A—the most severe.
He faced court flanked by police amid media and protesters, a shocking downfall for the once-trusted face of BBC News.
BBC Issues Statement as Public Outcry Grows
The BBC condemned Edwards’ conduct, stating: “If at any point during Mr Edwards’ employment the charges had been brought, he would have been immediately dismissed. At the time of charge, he was no longer employed by the BBC.”
Adding, “There can be no place for such abhorrent behaviour and our thoughts are with all those affected.”
Critics have slammed the broadcaster for slow action, highlighting ongoing concerns over how the BBC handles allegations against high-profile personalities.
