Iranian Man Held Over Alleged Brighton Beach Rape Attack
An Iranian national has been remanded in custody after facing charges over a shocking alleged rape on Brighton beach.
Abdulla Ahmadi, 25, from Crewe, appeared before Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. He used a translator during the hearing and was ordered to stay in custody until the next hearing at Lewes Crown Court on November 13.
Three Men Charged Over Night Attack
Ahmadi is one of three men charged following an alleged attack on a 33-year-old woman at Brighton’s Lower Esplanade in the early hours of October 4.
- Abdulla Ahmadi, 25, Iranian national
- Karin Al-Danasurt, 20, Egyptian national from Horsham
- Ibrahim Alshafe, 25, Egyptian national from Horsham
Each faces two counts of rape. All three remain held in custody as investigations continue.
Rapid Police Action
Sussex Police launched a swift probe after the incident was reported at about 5am on October 4. Detective Superintendent Andy Harbour praised the “fast-paced investigation” and the “thorough investigative work” that led to the suspects’ quick identification.
“I commend the bravery of the victim who we continue to support with specialist officers,” said Det Supt Harbour.
“We understand how distressing this is for the community and our efforts to protect women and girls will continue.”
Ongoing Victim Support and Safety Concerns
The 33-year-old victim continues to receive support from specially trained police officers. The case has reignited fears over women’s safety in Brighton, especially along its popular beachfront after dark.
Brighton, known for its bustling nightlife, attracts millions of visitors yearly. Local authorities have stepped up safety measures including improved lighting, extra patrols, CCTV, and safe space initiatives.
Next Steps in Court
Ahmadi used a court translator highlighting the international profile of the case, involving Iranian and Egyptian nationals.
Following initial hearings in magistrates’ court, serious cases like these move to crown courts. All three men face trial at Lewes Crown Court, where they remain presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Remand in custody means the trio will stay behind bars until their next appearance on November 13, as magistrates ruled there are risks they might evade justice or interfere with witnesses.
If convicted, they could face lengthy sentences under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, potentially including life imprisonment.
