ITV Unveils Shocking Essex Millionaire Murders Documentary
A grisly tale of deceit and murder rocks Essex in a brand-new two-part ITV true-crime special, Essex Millionaire Murders. Airing on ITV1 at 9pm on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 April, the documentary delves into the chilling deaths of wealthy couple Carol and Stephen Baxter.
From Trust to Tragedy: The Dark Secret Behind the Deaths
Found dead at their plush West Mersea home on 9 April 2023, Carol and Stephen’s deaths first seemed peaceful. But investigators soon uncovered a sinister plot involving family friend Luke D’Wit, who masqueraded as a doctor. He duped the couple into taking a so-called “liver cleanse” laced with lethal fentanyl, a powerful opioid.
Luke D’Wit now serves a life sentence with a minimum of 37 years after being convicted for the murders.
Exclusive Eyewitness Accounts and Police Insights
The ITV documentary, produced by Candour, features exclusive interviews with key Essex Police officers including Detective Inspector Lydia George, the Senior Investigating Officer. DI George revealed the chilling control D’Wit held over the Baxters:
“Luke D’Wit took away everything Carol and Stephen should have had – a retirement filled with love, family, and joy. His actions were not only cruel and calculated, but also deeply disturbing in their level of deception and control.”
Detective Constables Kerry Turner, Emily Larkin, and Reuben Brame also share their roles in piecing together D’Wit’s web of lies. The documentary includes touching interviews with the Baxters’ daughter, Ellena, and Kathy Ayling KC, the lead prosecutor at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Spotlight on Elder Abuse: Essex Police Teams Up with Charity
In a powerful move, Essex Police are partnering with Hourglass, the UK’s only charity dedicated to protecting older adults from abuse. They aim to raise awareness about elder abuse, especially at the hands of those trusted by victims.
“Carol and Stephen were unaware of the extent of the abuse they were suffering,” said a police spokesperson. “Sadly, their story is not unique. We hope this documentary raises awareness and gives others the courage to seek help.”
