Shocking Scam: Man Rips Off Dementia Pensioner for £42,000 in Shoddy Garden Work
A ruthless fraudster has been jailed for fleecing an 88-year-old dementia sufferer out of over £40,000 for botched garden jobs.
Substandard Work and Sky-High Bills
Elliot Shaw carried out minor tasks at the pensioner’s home throughout 2022. The “work” included removing a greenhouse, painting window frames, and trimming bushes — all of poor quality. Despite the shoddy effort, Shaw demanded payments ranging from £500 to £3,000 each time.
Bank Staff Spot Fraud, Police Step In
The scam unravelled when a vigilant bank employee raised the alarm after the victim tried to secure a loan to pay Shaw. Police found dozens of transactions between July and December 2022. Shaw had siphoned a staggering £42,000 by exploiting the man’s memory loss.
Justice Served: Shaw Sentenced to Over 3 Years
The 34-year-old from Newark pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Derby Crown Court sentenced him to three years and four months behind bars on 23 May.
“This was a despicable and targeted attack on a vulnerable elderly man,” said PC Emily Carnan, lead investigator.
“Shaw repeatedly took money from the victim, fully aware that his dementia meant he couldn’t recall previous payments. His greed and lack of empathy are shocking.”
“Anyone who suspects they’ve been scammed should report it to Action Fraud online or call 0300 123 2040.”
