Baby Among Nine Hurt in Fiery Thames Boat Blast Near Lechlade
A boat exploded and burst into flames on the River Thames near Lechlade just before midday on Saturday, sending nine people to hospital – including a baby.
Massive Emergency Response Hits the Scene
The blast happened on a residential vessel close to the Wiltshire-Gloucestershire border. Quick-thinking bystanders jumped into action, rescuing several people from the burning boat and the river.
Rescue teams scrambled to the scene. Two air ambulances from 1 Valley and Hampshire & Isle of Wight landed nearby. Six land ambulances, three Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) units, and two rapid response vehicles also raced in.
Fire crews from Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and MOD Fire Services joined police from Gloucestershire Constabulary, Thames Valley, Wiltshire, and MOD Police in a full multi-agency blitz on the chaos.
Injured Victims Rushed to Hospitals
Police confirmed nine people suffered injuries. A baby was airlifted to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children for urgent care. Another seriously hurt victim was flown to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Others were taken by road to nearby hospitals. While details on their conditions are yet unclear, reports suggest at least two have been discharged.
Wiltshire Police Lead Investigation
Wiltshire Police, overseeing the probe due to the location, said:
“A section of the river was closed and enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Officers remain at the scene gathering evidence.”
No word yet on the cause or if foul play is suspected. Forensic teams continue combing the site as parts of the river stay cordoned off.
Eyewitnesses Describe Chaotic Rescue
Locals heard a loud bang before seeing thick smoke and flames engulf the boat. One witness recalled:
“People were jumping into the water and others dragged victims to safety. It was chaos, but the public stepped in incredibly bravely.”
Lechlade Community Stunned
The busy boating hotspot was buzzing with visitors when disaster struck, leaving the area shaken. Parts of the river and towpaths remain closed as investigations continue.
