Man Guilty of Wounding and Firearm Possession in Shocking Pub Attack
Man Found Guilty After Terrifying Pub Gun Ordeal at Tan Hill
Richard Bowser, 46, from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, has been found guilty of wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life following a chilling incident at the popular Tan Hill pub last July.
Chaos Erupts at Busy Tan Hill Pub
On 21 July 2023, Bowser arrived at the Tan Hill public house at around 4.30pm with a family member and checked into a camping pod on site. The pub was packed that evening, with a live band playing and many customers enjoying their night out.
Bowser socialised at the bar but trouble kicked off just after 10pm. He struggled to pay his tab, swore loudly, and ignored staff requests to calm down. After being asked to leave, he returned, hurling abuse at staff and assaulting several customers, including slapping and pushing both male and female patrons.
Violent Attack Escalates to Armed Threat
The violence continued as Bowser struck a staff member and was forcibly pushed out by other customers. After retreating to his pod briefly, he re-emerged, brandishing a firearm.
He confronted one victim outside the pod, attempted to force him into a toilet, and fired several shots after the man locked himself inside a room. Fortunately, the gun misfired initially, giving the victim time to escape and call the police.
Bowser then fired into the air before trying unsuccessfully to re-enter the locked pub. Armed officers responded quickly and detained him with a taser before charging him with attempted murder.
Police Praise Staff’s Bravery as Bowser Faces Justice
“The actions of Bowser that night were absolutely abhorrent and are likely to have a lasting effect on the victim and those who witnessed this horrendous ordeal,” said Detective Superintendent Fran Naughton.
“Praise must go to the brave and quick-thinking members of staff who ensured customer safety and fully supported the police investigation leading to this conviction.”
“This was an isolated incident but its impact on the Tan Hill community is profound. We hope it doesn’t stop people enjoying this special venue.”
Bowser pleaded guilty earlier to assault and actual bodily harm but was found not guilty of attempted murder charges. Sentencing is due at Teesside Crown Court at a later date.
