Tube Punch Tragedy: Man Found Guilty of Manslaughter
Fatal Blow at East London Tube Station
A deadly punch at a London Underground station has claimed a man’s life. Rakeem Miles, 23, from Southwark, was convicted of manslaughter after delivering a single fatal blow to fellow passenger Samuel Winter, 28.
The shocking attack happened on August 22, 2024, around 9.30pm at a south east London station on the Jubilee line. Samuel had just stepped off the eastbound train when the two men crossed paths—though they’d never met before. As Samuel climbed the escalator, he apparently brushed past Miles. What happened next was fatal.
Enraged, Miles chased Samuel through ticket barriers, caught him at the station exit, grabbed him from behind, tore his shirt, and smashed a punch to his head. Samuel collapsed on the stairs and was rushed to hospital with a critical brain injury but died the next day, surrounded by his family.
Police Hunt and Arrest Lead to Court
British Transport Police launched a rapid investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and travel card data. Their sleuthing paid off when detectives traced Miles through his Oyster card top-up near the station. He was arrested just outside that shop on August 23, initially for grievous bodily harm. After Samuel’s death, the charge was upgraded to manslaughter.
Family Heartbreak and Forgiveness
“We have lost our gentle, hugely compassionate, funny, intelligent and hard-working son Sam because of this entirely unprovoked and horrific assault. We would do anything to have Sam back with us. But he’s gone for the rest of our lives. The pain of his loss is almost unbearable,” said the devastated Winter family.
They admitted the court verdict brought some closure but was “not a pleasure” and extended forgiveness to Miles.
Police Speak Out Against Violence
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell hit out at the senseless violence: “One punch changed Samuel’s family forever. He was gentle and kind, and he will be sorely missed.”
He added, “Miles showed no remorse, leaving the scene to continue his evening. This case is a stark warning of how quickly violence can destroy lives.”
What’s Next?
Miles is due to be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on May 8. British Transport Police reiterated their zero-tolerance approach to violence on the transport network and praised their officers for the swift investigation that cracked the case.
