Doctor Found Guilty After Nearly Killing Patient with Anaesthetic Overdose
Sheffield Crown Court has convicted Dr Hossam Metwally of nine offences following an eight-week trial ending today, Friday 6 August.
Patient Nearly Dies After Receiving Toxic Drugs
On 5 July 2019, a woman was rushed to hospital in Grimsby unresponsive and in critical condition. Doctors discovered she had been given toxic anaesthetic drugs—substances meant only for clinical use.
Investigation Points Straight to Doctor Metwally
Major Crime officer Simon Smith said, “This was a very unusual case. The woman nearly died after being administered dangerously high levels of anaesthetic.”
“We acted fast and arrested Dr Metwally on 7 July 2019, charging him with administering a noxious substance that endangered life.”
Further probes uncovered more wrongdoing, including fraud where Metwally wrote fake prescriptions to obtain drugs illegally.
Doctor Also Admits Voyeurism Charges
Shockingly, Metwally also pleaded guilty to two voyeurism offences from 2013-2014. He secretly filmed patients undressing during medical appointments.
Police reassured the public no other victims were found after a thorough investigation.
Sentencing Set for September
Detectives expressed relief at the verdict and hope the sentence handed down on Monday 20 September reflects the gravity of Metwally’s crimes.
